The easiest way to identify what you have is to look for a manufacturer plate or sticker on the damper frame itself, usually riveted near the hinge. If that’s gone, measure the throat opening. • The plate won’t fully close, leaving a gap you can feel. On cast-iron dampers, the plate warps slightly over time, especially if the fireplace has seen heavy use. A warped plate never seals right again, even if you lean on the handle.
• You feel a cold draft through the fireplace when it’s not in use. With top-sealing dampers, this almost always means the cable has stretched or the gasket has gone flat. The spring tension at the top loses its grip, and the seal lets air slip past.

You can safely check a few things yourself. If the handle spins freely, take a look inside the firebox with a flashlight and see if the rod is still attached to the plate. If the plate is visibly rusted through or warped, that’s all you need to know. No special tools required.

Here’s where do-it-yourself goes wrong: cast-iron damper plates are heavy, awkward, and installed in a tight space. If one slips while you’re on your back inside the firebox, it can crush a finger or crack the firebrick.
