How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

• Gelco High-Temp 316L liner seam separation. The 316L series is a solid liner, but we regularly find seams starting to open on units that were pulled tight around an offset or through a corbeled flue. When the liner is stretched or twisted during install, the welded seam becomes the weak point. In Brentwood capes with short, straight flues this rarely shows up. On taller two-story colonials with offsets, it does. Our fix is a measured inspection first; if the separation is localized, we can often sleeve and re-secure. If it runs the length of the flue, replacement is the honest call.
• Gelco flexible liner kinking at the smoke shelf. Some Gelco flexible liners were sized too close to the flue tile dimensions. That leaves almost no room to maneuver around the smoke shelf, and the liner kinks right there. You’ll notice reduced draft and a smoky smell that never fully clears. We cut the old liner out, re-measure the actual flue path, and size the replacement down a step so it makes the turn without folding.
• Gelco rain cap and termination clamp corrosion. The cap on top of many Gelco installs is factory-supplied, and we see rust-through on the clamp ring faster than on the liner itself. That’s especially true near the water. Your liner may be fine while the cap and clamp are letting rain straight down onto the liner interior. We replace what’s failed with stainless aftermarket caps rather than another factory part that’ll do the same thing in six years.
• Gelco liner thinning at the first flue tile offset. This shows up on systems that run wood stoves or inserts. Creosote accumulates at the first offset, gets hot, and repeatedly bakes the liner wall. Over years the 316L alloy thins there, and a camera inspection will show wall loss you can’t see from the top or the firebox. When we find it, we quote the liner section rather than the whole run if the rest of the liner passes camera check.
• Gelco mortar crown cracking above the liner flue. Not strictly a liner failure, but we see many Gelco liner jobs where the original crown wasn’t re-pointed or re-cast, and now the crown is pulling apart around the termination. That lets water run down along the liner exterior and into the masonry. We re-cast the crown with a proper slope away from the flue opening and seal the termination joint.
